Big air at the U.S. National Freeskiing Championships, but also tragedy

Have you been paying attention to the great stuff that Skiing Magazine is doing online? No? Then you’ve been missing cool demos of equipment, interactive lessons and lots of really funny bits (How to Build a Shot Ski). But they still also cover skiing in all its variety, including this slideshow from last weekend’s North American Freestyle Championships at Kirkwood in California. Not only will you find out who won, you’ll see the competitors getting ridiculous air off the cliffs on The Cirque.

Sadly, the event also saw the death of noted big-mountain skier Ryan Hawks, who died from a serious injury that resulted from an awkward landing after a back flip off a cliff. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Read this fine profile of Ryan in the Burlington Free Press.
