Rising U.S. Ski Team star Mikaela Shiffrin takes third in World Cup slalom in Finland; Ligety doesn’t make podium,but stands third overall

UPDATE: Young Mikaela Shiffrin of the U.S. Ski Team earned a surprising podium Saturday at the first World Cup slalom of the season in Levi, Finland. The teenager from the Eagle-Vail area of Colorado, starting her second season on the tour, finished third behind race winner Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany. In the men’s race on Sunday, Andre Myhrer of Sweden won the first men’s World Cup slalom of the season. American Ted Ligety tied for 13th place and is now third in the overall standings. Read more.

NOV. 9: The World Cup season begins in earnest this weekend for the U.S. Ski Team with men’s and women’s World Cup slalom races set for Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 10-11) in Levi, Finland.

The U.S. men will be led by Ted Ligety, who blasted the field by an historic 2.75-second margin at the World Cup giant slalom opener in Soelden. The women’s team will look to young racer Mikaela Shiffrin, in search of her second World Cup podium, to lead the way.

The U.S. racers missing the weekend are notable. Olympic gold medalists Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso are not in Finland, instead focusing on the Nov. 24-25 Nature Valley Aspen Winternational in Aspen. Bode Miller also will sit out to continue injury recovery from knee surgery at the end of last season.
