Lindsey Vonn wins third straight World Cup Gold in Lake Louise, taking Super G while Julia Mancuso gets second; Tina Maze remains overall leader

Audi FIS LogoiUPDATE, Dec. 2: Just call it a hat trick for Lindsey Vonn, who added gold in a World Cup Super G in Lake Louise for her third win of the weekend — the second year in a row she pulled off the feat. Speaking of hat tricks, another American claimed second place on Sunday. This time it was Julia Mancuso. Slovenian star Tina Maze took fourth and still leads the overall standings. Read more.

Dec. 1: Americans Lindsey Vonn and Stacey Cook run 1-2 for the second day in a row in a Lake Louise Downhill. Vonn’s 55th career win ties Vreni Schneider for second all-time. Read more.

NOV. 30. Lindsey Vonn flattened the field in Friday’s World Cup Downhill at Lake Louise, less than one week removed from collapsing in exhaustion after a Giant Slalom run in Aspen.

Vonn, hospitalized with a serious illness two weeks ago, made everyone else look  sick with a dominating performance at one of the American’s favorite stops (she has 12 wins there) on the World Cup circuit. More good news for the U.S. Ski Team: fellow American Stacey Cook finished second. More sobering: She was an astonishing 1.73 seconds back. Maria Hoefl-Riesch claimed third, just an eyelash back of Cook and 1.74 behind Vonn, earning her a tie with Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein.

Vonn did not even take part in Thursday’s final downhill training run in Lake Louise. Then again, that might be because she was happy with Wednesday’s run, when she could have had the best time but stood up near the finish, presumably to save energy.

Marion Rolland of France had two of the top training runs but finished more than 2 seconds back in 10th. American Julia Mancuso finished 8th, 1.94 behind Vonn. Tina Maza, the Slovenian star who has been dominant so far in slalom events, finished a distant 3.26 seconds back but still managed a respectable 18th.

The weekend will continue with a second Downhill on Saturday, followed by a Super G on Sunday.
