The latest on World Cup skier Tina Maze

Four of the past five seasons Lindsey Vonn has won the Overall women’s World Cup ski title.

Not this season. A fast start by Tina Maze, including two slalom wins and a Giant slalom podium, followed by a Super Combined win on Dec. 7 in St. Moritz, vaulted the Slovenian star atop the standings.

After Vonn took additional time off to heal an early-season injury, Maze grew the lead to such a commanding size that even some podium finishes after Vonn returned hardly dented it. And while Maria Hoefl-Riesch has had a fine season, she put little pressure on Maze. Then Vonn went down with a season-ending injury at Worlds.

So when Maze won the Super Combined on Sunday (Feb. 24) in Meribel, France, she reached 1,844 World Cup points, which gave her an unassailable lead (more than 1,000 points with nine races left) over Hoefl-Riesch.

That being said, Maze still has big goals in sight. With her point total the Slovenian has a great shot at being the first woman to crack the 2,000-point barrier in a season.
